What to expect at a Cacao Ceremony.
When you join one of my cacao ceremonies, you’re stepping into a safe, nurturing space designed to help you slow down, connect inwards, and open your heart. We begin by sharing a warm cup of ceremonial-grade cacao (Theobroma cacao), whose name translates from Greek as “food of the gods”. This name reflects both its ancient reverence in indigenous traditions and its rich, nourishing qualities.
Ceremonial cacao is far more than just chocolate in its purest form—it’s a plant medicine packed with natural goodness. It is rich in magnesium, which supports muscle relaxation, energy production, and a calm nervous system. It also contains iron for healthy blood flow, antioxidants to protect the body from oxidative stress, and compounds such as theobromine, which can gently energise without the jittery effects of caffeine. Cacao also stimulates the release of serotonin, dopamine, and anandamide—the “bliss molecule”—helping to lift mood and promote a sense of well-being.
As you drink, these natural compounds begin to work within you, helping to open the heart, quieten the mind, and create a feeling of clarity and emotional warmth. This is a safe space where you are held and supported, free from judgement or expectation. Whatever arises for you—whether emotions, insights, or simply stillness—you are encouraged to allow it to flow, just like the cacao itself. Here, you don’t need to “do” anything. You are invited to simply be.
We’ll set personal intentions for the session, allowing you to focus on what you wish to release, invite, or explore. You may feel more open, creative, and connected—to yourself, to others, and to something greater.
Cacao works beautifully as a standalone experience, offering time for reflection, meditation, or journalling. It also pairs perfectly with a sound bath, where the heart-opening qualities of cacao prepare you to receive and integrate the healing vibrations of sound on a deeper level. Together, cacao and sound create a truly immersive journey—helping you to release tension, restore balance, and reconnect with your inner wisdom.
Many people leave a cacao ceremony feeling lighter, more centred, and more connected—not only to themselves, but to life itself.
Private cacao ceremonies are also available for personal groups, retreats, celebrations, and other special occasions. Please contact me to arrange your event.
Cacao & Your Wellbeing – Contra Indications
Cacao is a gentle yet powerful heart-opener that most people can enjoy safely. In traditional cultures, it’s been cherished for centuries as a nourishing, energising plant ally. That said, it’s important to honour your body and be mindful if you have certain health considerations.
You may wish to enjoy a smaller serving, or check with me first, if you:
Are taking antidepressants (especially SSRIs, MAOIs, or antipsychotic medication). MAOIs and cacao aren’t a safe mix, so in that case it’s best to avoid.
Take 5-HTP or St John’s Wort (you might choose to pause St John’s Wort for a few days before and after).
Have a heart condition, low blood pressure, or are sensitive to stimulants — cacao can gently increase heart rate and lower blood pressure.
Are pregnant or breastfeeding — in many traditions, cacao is enjoyed throughout pregnancy and even during birth, but a smaller serving is a gentle way to see how you respond.
Are prone to migraines or headaches triggered by theobromine.
Have epilepsy, as large amounts of cacao may increase the risk of seizures for some.
Cacao has only about a tenth of the caffeine in coffee, so it’s far gentler on the system. While some people notice an energy lift, others find they sleep deeply and dream vividly afterwards.
If you’re unsure how your body might respond, we can simply start with a half-serve. The most important thing is that you feel safe, supported, and comfortable as you journey with this beautiful plant medicine.
